How to Clean a Rain Barrel

The end of summer has brought extraordinary weather events to the United States in the form of hurricanes Harvey and Irma. Extreme rain and wind can increase sediment build up in rain barrels. Top that off with warmer-than-average temperatures, and you’ve got an increase in bugs and other creepers to deal with, too. Now might be a good time to give your hard-working rain barrel a good cleaning. Here are the steps:

  1. Drain and disconnect your barrel from the downspout.
  2. Clear the gutter that feeds your rain barrel from debris. You can rinse it with a garden hose to be sure it drains properly.
  3. Check the gutter for anything large blocking the downspout.
  4. Replace any screen filters on the downspout. If you have a leaf guard filter (like the one here,) make sure it is clean, too.
  5. Remove and clean or replace the mesh screen on your rain barrel. This is the last essential barrier to keep out insects or critters.
  6. Inspect the inside of your rain barrel for cracks, debris on the bottom, or algae growth in the interior.
  7. Lay the barrel on its side and thoroughly spray rinse the interior.
  8. Using a long-handled brush, scrub the interior. A mixture of vinegar and water, or a light bleach and water solution, will work as a cleaner. Rinse the barrel again and let it air dry.
  9. Inspect the spigot of the barrel; unscrew it, wipe the threads and replace it if necessary.
  10. After the barrel has dried completely, reattach it to the downspout.
